When our children were little, a broken rule meant an easy, natural consequence:
- Misuse of a toy—The child’s toy was taken away
- The telling of a lie: Privileges taken away; earned back when child demonstrated trustworthiness
- Stealing: Child was made to return the stolen item and write a letter of apology
- Anger/Temper Tantrum: Child was given a time out
Somehow, as our children grew into adults, the consequences of their negative behavior have become nearly as unthinkable as the negative behavior.
